Dr. Sam Won Yi migrated from South Korea to America with his family at the age of 13 and grew up in Philadelphia, PA. He went to Columbia University(New York, NY) and earned his BS in Environmental Engineering.
After completing his undergraduate study, Dr. Yi graduated from the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry with his MD and stayed there for his residency training in radiation oncology. Then he became a board-certified radiation oncologist. During his education and training, he received numerous scholarships and awards for his academic achievements including medical research(oral and poster abstract presentations at loco-regional, national, and international scientific meetings as well as multiple publications in peer-reviewed medical journals).
After practicing in a private practice for a couple of years, Dr. Yi took over a small radiation oncology practice in Western NY. His passion for providing the state-of-the art cancer services in a community-based outpatient setting (not academic or hospital based) prompted his practice to “modernize” its radiation therapy service by replacing the “old” technology with the new medical technology and equipment.
In addition, Dr. Yi decided to strive toward providing a first class cancer service in comprehensive and integrated fashion at multiple community cancer centers.
As a result, he was able to unite the fragmented oncology community by bringing multiple oncology practices into one organization and offer comprehensive services in medical oncology, hematology, radiation oncology, surgical oncology, gynecologic oncology, genetic counseling, cancer screening, and survivorship under one umbrella.
As CEO and executive medical director, Dr. Yi also expanded his medical practice to provide clinical services beyond oncology including primary care (family medicine or internal medicine), ob/gyn, urology, and pulmonology.
His practice has been recognized for its clinical excellence by national organizations such as American College of Radiology, American Society of Clinical Oncology, and American College of Surgeons.
For a few years, his practice also sponsored various community organizations such as: Susan B Komen Race for Cure (Buffalo, NY), American Cancer Society Relay for Life (Lockport, NY), Cure the Blue (Western NY), and Trot with Troops (Buffalo, NY)
Dr. Won Sam Yi is a member of American Society of Therapeutic Radiation Oncology (ASTRO), American College of Radiation Oncology, American Brachytherapy Society, and American Society of Clinical Oncology.
When Sam is not practicing medicine, he enjoys playing golf and listening to classical music. Or you might catch him at his church teaching Sunday school and youth group kids.
