As President of the Kansas Association of Orthodontics I was in charge of selecting the speaker for our 2011 annual meeting. Having worked with Jay through the Tweed Study Club of Kansas City it was an easy decision to select Jay as our speaker for our two day event. Jay did not disappoint – he is a terrific speaker, an innovator, a scholar, a teacher and a clinician and I recommend him for any of those tasks. I also recommend Jay as an orthodontist for anyone in the Kalamazoo area who is considering orthodontic treatment. I have the utmost respect for Jay, he is working to successfully advance our profession.

I am recommending Dr. Bowman as he has extensive knowledge in orthodontics. He’s conducted research, written numerous articles and book chapters, invented new concepts, and shared that knowledge through teaching and lecturing around the world. I’ve known him as a colleague, an attendee at his lectures, as collaborator on peer reviews in the Angle Society of Orthodontists, and most importantly, as a friend.

Hey Jay, After just finishing my 31st year teaching at CADE, I am thrilled to see you at the forefront representing our department in a most excellent way! I congratulate you on your intellectual prowess demonstrated consistently in your lectures over and over again as you have traveled everywhere “except the North and South Poles”. You have been following Lysle Johnston’s footsteps in insisting on “truth” instead of “political correctness”, the latter we see perniciously creeping into the “scientific discussions” of current orthodontic trends. Jay, people will not necessarily remember all of your professional accomplishments, but they will remember what you share with them, especially if it is “true” – factual, accurate, and reproducible. I know of no other orthodontic academic who has been as consistent in adhering to this “guideline” as has Lysle. For some, his reputation has waned because he hasn’t stayed within the mold of “political correctness” many contrarians shaped for themselves. On the other hand, Lysle’s reputation has risen exponentially for those who have searched for “truth”. “Truth” will never accuse – “political correctness” does, because the latter is intolerant.
You have chosen an excellent mentor to follow – I have never heard anyone say that Lysle is dishonest. Honesty oftentimes hurts and convicts – you and I have both experienced this quite often being students of Lysle! So I salute you in your ongoing quest to share your experiences with others around the world – truthfully. I am proud of what you are doing! Keep up the good work!

In Adelaide, South Australia, we have recently been privileged to have Jay spend two weeks with us all whilst he was the external examiner of the final year post-Graduate students, along with Dr. James Hawkins of Sydney,Australia and he also presented three lectures at the U. of A. DREF conference on the last day of his visit. His orthodontic attributes were appreciated by all. During his visit he and Beckie became engaged and they and we all were excited that the proposal occurred on their visit to Kangaroo Island south of Adelaide. Kangaroo Island is a unique place and is perhaps the most frequented tourist destination in southern Australia for all northern hemisphere visitors to our country, especial offshore from the mainland and especially for Beckie and Jay as their engagement occurred at Seal Bay.
Congratulations to them both. They now have no excuse but to revisit us all “down south” in the years ahead to celebrate their formal relationship.
