Dr. Shakir received his MD from the Boston University School of Medicine in 1999, as part of the school’s seven year bachelor’s and MD program. After completing medical school, he went on to the North Shore Long Island Jewish Health System for his general surgery residency. He completed his Cardiothoracic Surgical Training at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital.
Upon completion of his training, Dr. Shakir joined Cardiovascular Surgical Associates and has been a member since 2007. He recently served as Director of the Lung Cancer Program at Centrastate Medical Center of Freehold NJ, where he practiced the latest techniques in diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer surgery, achieving excellent outcomes. While there he hosted the first annual Thoracic Services Symposium.
Dr. Shakir is a member of the American College of Health Executives, he is a diplomate of the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery and he completed a management program from the Wharton School of Business. Dr. Shakir is slated to be profiled in NJ Magazine’s top doctors issue of October 2011.
Dr. Shakir’s professional interests include thoracic oncology, open-heart surgery and thoracic aorta stent grafts placement.
Dr. Shakir’s hobbies include playing basketball, scuba diving, mixed martial arts and traveling.
