I have known Dr. Mein by reputation since 2004, and personally since 2006. He exemplifies what being a doctor is all about. The care of the patient comes first. It can be difficult to keep this as a primary focus with all of the stresses of life and running a private practice. It is clear that he takes great pride and joy from his calling. He regularly meets and collaborates with colleagues around the world, continuously seeking to expand his mastery of the retinal subspecialty. His care and judgement as a physician and surgeon are top notch. Beyond his impressive accolades and excellence as a doctor, I know him to be straightforward, caring, and honest.
Dr. Mein is the most respected ophthalmologist in San Antonio. He trained at the prestigious Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami and then served as Chief of Ophthalmology at Brooke Army Medical Center. Since starting private practice in 1991 he has been a leader in San Antonio. He teaches residents at the University of Texas Health Science Center and he is regularly invited to give lectures around the world. He founded a world class retina research program that specializes in macular degeneration and diabetic eye disease. I have known Dr. Mein for 16 years and he is an ethical, compassionate and supremely skilled surgeon. He is the only retina doctor I would want to operate on me or my family.
